158 Democrats Block Immigration Bill Targeting Sex Crime Convictions

The House passed a Republican-led bill to deport illegal immigrants convicted of sexual crimes, with 158 Democrats voting against it. The Violence Against Women by Illegal Aliens Act, authored by Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC), passed 266-158, drawing bipartisan support from 51 Democrats.

The bill seeks to deport individuals in the U.S. illegally who are convicted of sexual offenses, conspiracy to commit such crimes, or domestic violence. Supporters, including Mace, argue it’s a necessary measure to protect vulnerable populations.

Opponents, however, criticized the bill as fearmongering. Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) claimed the legislation scapegoats immigrants rather than addressing systemic immigration issues, calling it another partisan maneuver by Republicans.

Mace’s own credibility has been questioned. Who has distanced herself from Trump, reports indicate she sought media attention during the January 6 protests by suggesting she confront rioters for publicity. Despite participating in the persecution of conservatives over that day, she has since aligned herself with Trump, fueling skepticism about her motivations.

Among the Democrats backing the bill were Reps. Mary Peltola (D-AK) and Marie Gluesenkamp-Perez (D-WA), both citing public safety as a primary concern. Their support reflects growing bipartisan acknowledgment of crime tied to illegal immigration.

The GOP continues to focus on immigration enforcement, making it a centerpiece of their legislative agenda.
