New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) defended President Donald Trump against accusations of being a “fascist” at a press conference on Saturday. He urged political leaders and the public to reduce the intensity of their rhetoric, stressing that such extreme language only divides the country further.
When asked if he thought Trump was a fascist, Adams responded, “My answer is no. I know what Hitler did, and I know what a fascist regime looks like. The comparison is not appropriate.” He explained that he has also been labeled with these terms and found them both unhelpful and hurtful.
Adams emphasized the importance of free speech, especially in New York City, where Trump is scheduled to hold a rally at Madison Square Garden. “This is America, and everyone should have the opportunity to share their views peacefully,” he said. He stated that his administration’s role is to ensure the event remains safe and orderly.
His comments stand in contrast to those of Vice President Kamala Harris, who recently referenced an Atlantic report accusing Trump of admiring Hitler’s generals. The article also alleged that Trump expressed anger over the costs of Vanessa Guillen’s funeral, using offensive language. Harris and other Democrats, including California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D), have labeled Trump a “fascist.”
Adams’ defense of Trump highlights a divide within the Democratic Party as other leaders use increasingly harsh rhetoric. By urging for a more moderate approach, Adams seeks to prevent further escalation of political tensions and calls for more constructive conversations as the election nears.
