The tragic death of St. Louis Police Officer David Lee serves as another painful reminder of the consequences of the Biden-Harris administration’s failure to secure the southern border. Officer Lee, who was struck and killed by a suspected illegal immigrant, is just the latest casualty in a growing list of crimes involving those who have entered the country unlawfully. This incident raises serious questions about how many lives could have been saved had the administration taken border security seriously.
On a rainy Sunday morning, Officer Lee was responding to a crash on Interstate 70 when he was hit by 24-year-old Ramon Chavez-Rodriguez. Chavez-Rodriguez, an illegal immigrant on probation for domestic assault and DWI charges, was found to have a blood alcohol content of .10. His reckless driving, speeding 71 mph in a 55 mph zone, ended the life of a man who had dedicated his career to protecting his community.
While illegal immigration proponents argue that these crimes are rare, the numbers tell a different story. According to data from Texas, from 2011 to 2024, over 441,000 noncitizen criminals have been arrested, with 312,000 of them in the country illegally. These individuals have been charged with violent crimes including 1,604 murders, 93,704 assaults, and over 9,000 sexual assaults. Yet the Biden-Harris administration continues to insist that the border is under control.
Had the administration acted to secure the border and enforce immigration laws, Officer Lee might still be alive today. Instead, communities are paying the price as criminals, who should never have been allowed to enter the country, continue to wreak havoc. The loss of Officer Lee leaves his wife, two children, and an entire community grieving—yet another family torn apart due to the administration’s refusal to address the border crisis.
