Europe Expands Military Forces As US Seeks To End Ukraine War

Despite calls from the United States to end the conflict in Ukraine, European nations are escalating military preparations, increasing troop numbers and discussing nuclear expansion. These moves put Europe on a dangerous path that risks triggering a wider war with Russia.

Poland has announced that all men will now be required to undergo military training as the country seeks to double its armed forces. Prime Minister Donald Tusk revealed plans to increase Poland’s army to 500,000 troops and hinted at the pursuit of nuclear capabilities. Additionally, Poland is reconsidering its commitments to international agreements that ban cluster munitions and landmines, further signaling its readiness for large-scale conflict.

Germany is also changing its stance on military power. Chancellor-in-waiting Friedrich Merz has called for Europe to strengthen its nuclear deterrence, pushing for greater cooperation with the UK and France. While Germany has historically remained a non-nuclear military power, Merz’s proposal indicates that European leaders are preparing for a future without full reliance on U.S. protection.

French President Macron is leading efforts to increase European military involvement in Ukraine. He has proposed gathering European military leaders to discuss deploying troops into the region following an eventual peace agreement. However, Russia has firmly opposed any European troop presence in Ukraine. Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned that Moscow would view such a deployment as NATO establishing a military foothold in Ukraine — an act Russia has stated it will not tolerate.

The European Union is also reinforcing its military stance with the ReArm Europe initiative, an €800 billion investment in weapons systems, air defenses and drone warfare technology. This plan will provide major European defense contractors, including BAE Systems and Thales, with extensive new contracts as Europe shifts toward greater militarization.

Russia and the United States maintain the world’s largest nuclear arsenals, each possessing more than 5,000 warheads. France and the UK, by contrast, hold only 290 and 225, respectively, demonstrating the overwhelming scale of destruction that would come from any escalation into nuclear conflict.

At this time, European governments continue their military expansion, ignoring calls from the U.S. to seek a peaceful resolution to the war.
