A former CIA intelligence analyst has warned that the overall politicization of the intelligence community — including the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) push — has become a “significant” problem and will likely lead to the intel agencies trying to interfere in the 2024 election.

In an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital, ex-CIA analyst and Georgetown University professor Dr. John Gentry explained that he believes “the proverbial deep state within the intelligence community will reemerge because presumably a Republican candidate will again be seen as a threat to the internal policies that many intelligence people like.”
Gentry then pointed to a previous attempt to influence elections by the intel agencies — the CIA’s approval of the publication of the infamous letter discrediting the Hunter Biden laptop as Russian disinformation. He noted that the decision was “clearly political,” explaining that a highly positioned source had told him “in no uncertain terms” that the letter was approved “explicitly” with the “intent to help the Biden campaign.”
He went on to assert that there have already been signs in recent weeks that both current and former members of the intelligence community will be active in the 2024 election.
“I long have thought we are likely to again see former intelligence officers be politically active against Trump or whomever the Republican presidential candidate is next year, and I expect leaking to resume,” Gentry said. “The activities of ‘formers’ have resumed already, a bit before I expected.”
As an example, Gentry cited a recent article co-written by retired CIA official Marc Polymeropoulos, who left the agency in 2019 but was the co-lead on the infamous Hunter Biden laptop “open letter” in 2020, and former FBI employee Asha Rangappa warning about the “dangers” of former President Donald Trump’s rhetoric against the intelligence community.
“Asha Rangappa once worked at the FBI and also was openly anti-Trump, though as a relatively junior former, she attracted less attention than many,” Gentry said. “I think it is worth closely monitoring these people. Many have compromised their credibility by actions such as the ‘Laptop 51’ letter.”
Gentry also noted in the interview that he hoped that his new book — titled “Neutering the CIA: Why US Intelligence Versus Trump Has Long-Term Consequences” — would help readers “appreciate that there is a significant political problem within the agencies” and that former intelligence community members realized how much of an effect their actions had on the 2020 election yet “no one was criticized.”
“So, put all these things together, and I’m pretty confident that we’ll see a reemergence of activism,” Gentry added.
