His wife, Estefania McDonald Rodriguez, had been documenting their travels across Europe, sharing photos with her thousands of followers. Authorities monitoring her posts identified their movements through images of famous destinations including Paris, Rome, and Tokyo.
Rodriguez’s frequent social media updates provided crucial details that allowed law enforcement to track their whereabouts. Investigators had been watching her accounts, waiting for an opportunity to take Grijalba into custody once he left Costa Rica.
Grijalba had previously evaded capture in his home country due to legal protections that prevented extradition. His arrest in London came as the couple visited the city to celebrate the New Year, providing the perfect moment for law enforcement to act.
Nicknamed “Shock,” Grijalba is believed to have been a central figure in drug operations tied to rising violence in Costa Rica’s Limon province. He has survived multiple assassination attempts and is linked to ongoing cartel disputes in the region.
Following his capture, Rodriguez’s Instagram account was deactivated, though investigators have continued reviewing past posts. Grijalba is expected to face extradition to the U.S., where he could face a lengthy prison sentence if convicted.
