Vice President Kamala Harris is facing heavy criticism after announcing that the U.S. will send $157 million in aid to Lebanon, despite the ongoing crisis in the southeastern U.S. caused by Hurricane Helene. The aid announcement comes at a time when FEMA has reported funding shortages, with many American citizens still in desperate need of assistance.
Harris shared the news on X, explaining that the funds would be used to support essential needs in Lebanon, such as food and shelter for civilians displaced by conflict. She added that this brings total U.S. assistance to Lebanon to more than $385 million in the past year. However, the timing of this message has been criticized by many who believe that helping American citizens should come first.
Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) took to social media to criticize the Vice President’s priorities, saying, “If we renamed Florida and North Carolina to Lebanon and Ukraine, maybe Kamala Harris would send disaster relief faster.” Many conservatives share Scott’s frustration, arguing that American tax dollars should be spent supporting U.S. citizens, especially in the wake of a natural disaster.
With Americans in the Southeast still suffering and the potential for more storms looming, many are calling on the administration to put American needs first before sending millions overseas.
