Illegal Migrants Cost US $166 Billion In Crime, Report Finds

A new report highlights the financial and societal costs of crimes committed by illegal migrants on the Non-Detained Docket (NDD). According to Dr. John R. Lott’s analysis of U.S. Department of Justice data, these crimes cost taxpayers $166.5 billion annually.

ICE disclosed to Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-TX) that 662,566 illegal migrants with criminal records were on the NDD as of July 2024. Among them, 435,719 had criminal convictions in their home countries, and 226,847 faced pending charges.

The FBI’s 2023 crime data shows that migrants on the docket committed 14,944 homicides, 20,061 sexual assaults, and 105,146 assaults. Burglaries, larcenies, and robberies totaled 60,268 incidents, while traffic offenses accounted for 126,343 cases.

Lott estimated that homicides alone cost $153.8 billion annually, making up the majority of the $166.5 billion total. He warned that these figures likely underestimate the full cost, as they assume each individual commits only one crime.

The analysis also highlighted its limitations, noting that half of the migrants on the docket were not included in the data. This omission suggests the overall impact may be significantly higher.

The report has sparked discussions about reforming the policies that allow individuals with criminal records to remain free under the NDD system.
