Intelligence Officials Who Spread False Election Claims Lose Security Clearances

The Trump administration has revoked the security clearances of 51 former intelligence officials who signed a letter dismissing Hunter Biden’s laptop as a potential Russian disinformation operation. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard confirmed the action, stating that these individuals will no longer be granted access to classified information.

The officials impacted include former CIA Directors John Brennan, Leon Panetta, and Mike Hayden, as well as former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper. The move also affects former Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, and New York Attorney General Letitia James.

Additionally, Gabbard confirmed that former President Joe Biden would no longer receive the President’s Daily Brief, a routine intelligence report given to past presidents. This decision is part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to hold intelligence officials accountable for past actions that may have influenced domestic elections.

The executive order that led to these clearances being revoked was issued by President Donald Trump upon returning to office. It directed the intelligence community to assess how officials had used their access to shape election-related narratives.

Although the letter signed by the 51 officials was used to dismiss reporting on Hunter Biden’s laptop, some of the signers later admitted that they knew the laptop’s contents were likely real. Former CIA officer Douglas Wise acknowledged that the material on the device “had to be real” but that the letter was meant to create doubt about its authenticity.

Gabbard has already taken other disciplinary actions within the intelligence community. In February, she revoked the clearances of more than 100 National Security Agency employees after uncovering misconduct involving the misuse of classified communication platforms.
