Leftists Demand Congress Block Trump Certification, Undermining Democracy

Two leftist lawyers are pushing Congress to disqualify President-elect Donald Trump under the 14th Amendment, despite his decisive victory in the 2024 election. Their proposal is being criticized as an attack on democracy and a betrayal of voters’ trust.

Evan Davis and David Schulte allege Trump engaged in “insurrection,” a claim unsupported by any criminal conviction. They cite his second impeachment trial, where seven Republicans voted to convict him, though the Senate ultimately acquitted him.

They also reference the Colorado Supreme Court’s disqualification of Trump from the state’s ballot, a decision nullified by the U.S. Supreme Court. The court ruled that states have no authority to bar federal candidates from running for office.

Finally, they point to findings from the discredited January 6 Committee. Allegations of witness tampering and fabricated testimony have cast doubt on the committee’s credibility.

Davis and Schulte propose using the Electoral Count Act to reject Trump’s votes, allowing Kamala Harris to ascend to the presidency. This maneuver would undermine the Constitution and deny Americans the leader they elected.

The House Oversight Committee has also refuted many of the January 6 Committee’s claims, including allegations that Trump incited violence or supported chants of “Hang Mike Pence!”
