While talking to Fox News on Saturday, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) stated that President Joe Biden must take responsibility if any tragedies occur at the southern border as a result of ending the Title 42 immigration policy.
This policy was initially introduced by the Trump administration in March 2020, and authorized US Customs and Border Protection officials to deport unlawful border crossers for the purpose of avoiding the spread of COVID-19 at border detention centers.
The regulation was revived by the Biden administration in August 2021, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) revoked Title 42 on Friday, claiming that COVID treatments, such as vaccinations, are within easy reach. While Title 42 does not end until May 23, the GOP, and even some Democrats, are expressing concerns about the increase in US-Mexico border crossings.
While giving a statement to Fox News, McCarthy said that repealing Title 42 is not a good decision and it will attract more immigrants to illegally cross the border, which will benefit human traffickers and put more pressure on the Border Patrol agents.
McCarthy also added that this decision confirms President Joe Biden has renounced his responsibilities regarding the southern borders. Instead of fixing the border crisis, Biden is making it even worse.
Sens. Joe Manchin (D-WV), Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) and Mark Kelly (D-AZ), are all raising their voices against the repeal of Title 42.
“This year, the U.S. is already experiencing an extraordinary influx of illegal immigrants, and if the Biden administration revokes the Title 42 law, the outcomes will only get adverse,” stated Manchin on Friday.
On Tuesday the chief of the United States Border Patrol, Raul Ortiz, informed the media that his department is close to achieving 1 million illegal immigrant arrests since the beginning of 2021 FY. Ortiz also said that the Border Patrol agents have captured illegal aliens from 157 different nations.
