Authorities in Pennsylvania are investigating a large-scale theft after 100,000 organic eggs, valued at approximately $40,000, were stolen from a distribution trailer outside Pete & Gerry’s Organics in Greencastle. The theft occurred Saturday night, and law enforcement is now searching for leads.
The Pennsylvania State Police Chambersburg responded to the scene and confirmed the eggs had been taken from the back of a trailer at around 8:40 p.m. Pete & Gerry’s Organics issued a statement acknowledging the incident, stating that they are actively working with authorities to resolve the matter but could not provide additional details due to the ongoing investigation.
Officials have not disclosed how such a large quantity of eggs could have been stolen unnoticed. There have been no updates regarding potential suspects, and investigators have not indicated whether they believe the eggs were targeted due to rising prices.
Egg prices have surged in recent months, driven by an avian flu outbreak that has significantly reduced the supply of laying hens. Reports indicate that egg prices in December averaged $4.15 per dozen, marking a 14% increase from the previous month.
Pete & Gerry’s Organics, which has been in operation for decades, works with over 200 independent, family-run farms across several regions. The company has been recognized for its farming standards and commitment to animal welfare.
The investigation remains active, and police are urging anyone with information to contact the Pennsylvania State Police Chambersburg barracks.
