In a brazen attempt to rewrite the Constitution, a cabal of House progressives called on their party leaders in both chambers to dismantle the Supreme Court’s jurisdiction over a wide range of legal issues.
The incredibly short-sighted effort was led by Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Mondaire Jones (D-NY). A joint letter was sent to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-NY).
The legislators asked both leaders to support “restricting the Supreme Court’s appellate jurisdiction” on everything from abortion and marriage equality to contraception.
Leftist radicals’ contempt for the rule of law and the Constitution is on full display. If the court rules against your wishes, increase its size. If its members were nominated by a president you don’t like, it is “illegitimate.” Afraid it will rule against you? Strip its powers.
The group also raised the issues of voting rights and environmental legislation as areas of concern. Signees argued that the “far-right” high court is on a “rampage” against American freedoms.
This comes on the heels of the Supreme Court’s overturning last month of Roe v. Wade. On Friday, the House took the first legislative action directly in response to the ruling by voting to restore abortion rights nationally.
The Women’s Health Protection Act of 2022 passed by a 219-210 margin. A second bill to block legal ramifications for a woman or girl crossing state lines to have an abortion was approved 223-205. Neither have the slightest chance of passing the Senate.
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Republicans’ opposition to the bills was “extreme” and “out of touch.” Before the votes, Pelosi said the high court used a “wrecking ball” on fundamental rights.
Washington GOP Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers had a decidedly different take. She charged abortion is the “greatest human rights issue of our generation” and accused Democrats of pushing an “extreme agenda” on the country.
House Democrats in general and House progressives in particular are engaged in showboating — nothing more. There is zero chance that either of the two bills or the changing of SCOTUS powers will be enacted. It’s posturing, and in the case of AOC and her ilk, disrespectful and unwise.
