Remington Closing New York Plant Over ‘Legislative Environment’

Remington, one of the top firearm sellers in the U.S., recently announced it would be leaving New York, pointing out that the state’s “legislative environment” is concerning. The decision comes alongside a recent example of why they should be concerned about legislative hostility in the state, as former President Donald Trump was recently targeted and ruled against in a decision that may cost him $355 million.

The Associated Press pointed out that Remington CEO Ken D’Arcy indicated in a press release that New York’s anti-Second Amendment legislative agenda concerns the firearm industry.

Remington’s plant in Ilion, New York, is set to close soon after operating in the area since 1828, according to Breitbart News.

An employee at Remington, Jim Conover, who has worked at the Ilion plant since 1964, with his tenure at the company spanning more than 40 years, commented on the pending closure, saying, “When Remington leaves, it’s not going to be like a facility leaving, it’s going to be like part of your family has moved off.”

The Ilion plant is scheduled to be closed in March 2024. On Dec. 1, 2023, Breitbart News reported that Remington was planning to close the facility.

Several lawmakers in New York reacted to news of the closure.
In a joint statement, New York state Sen. Joseph Griffo (R), Assemblyman Brian Miller and Assemblyman Robert Smullen called Remington’s decision to close its Ilion plant “concerning and unfortunate.”

“Remington’s reported decision to close its Ilion plant next year is concerning and unfortunate. This facility, which received investment from the state, employs many local residents,” the statement read.

“Unfortunately, like we have seen all too often in New York, burdensome regulations, crippling taxes and problematic energy and other policies continue to force businesses and companies to flee the state, taking jobs and livelihoods with them,” it added.

“We will continue to communicate with state and federal officials and work to help and assist the company’s employees and their families during this difficult time,” it concluded.

New York Democrats have unleashed a war on firearms and Americans’ Second Amendment by enacting strict gun control measures that make it harder for law-abiding citizens to purchase weapons. The organization Everytown for Gun Safety ranks the state as number two in the U.S. for gun control laws.

Such laws include banning so-called “assault weapons,” barring the use of “high-capacity” magazines and regulating “ghost guns”, among other measures.
