Russia Alleges NATO Plans To Oust Zelenskyy Through Elections

Russia’s foreign intelligence service (SVR) has accused NATO of working to remove Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky by forcing elections that could replace him with a more compliant leader. According to SVR, the West sees Zelensky as an obstacle to peace talks and is preparing to damage his reputation through corruption allegations.

The claims follow statements from U.S. Special Envoy for Ukraine and Russia Keith Kellogg, who recently urged Ukraine to hold long-delayed elections. Reports suggest that Washington and Brussels have grown frustrated with Zelensky’s reluctance to move forward with negotiations, prompting speculation that new leadership could be on the table.

SVR alleges that Western governments intend to expose financial scandals linked to Zelensky’s administration, including accusations of embezzlement of military funds and selling weapons intended for Ukraine’s defense. The agency claims this campaign will be used to justify calls for a leadership change.

Despite his term ending in May 2023, Zelensky has remained in office, postponing elections under martial law. Western officials, according to SVR, now believe replacing him through elections would provide a way to maintain NATO influence while appearing democratic.

Former President Donald Trump’s return to office has added another layer of uncertainty to Ukraine’s future. Moscow claims that NATO’s strategy could be influenced by Trump’s approach, with the possibility of a shift in leadership aligning with new U.S. priorities.

Kellogg is expected to visit Kiev after attending the Munich Security Conference later this month. His meetings with Ukrainian and European leaders may provide further insight into whether elections will be held and how Zelensky’s position is being viewed by the West.
