The Trump administration is looking to sell off the Nancy Pelosi Federal Building in San Francisco, along with another government property, as part of a broader effort to reduce federal spending and cut down on empty, costly buildings.
A GSA report designated both the Pelosi Federal Building and the government offices at 50 United Nations Plaza as “non-core” properties that could be sold. The move comes as federal workers continue to work remotely, leaving taxpayers to foot the bill for largely unused office spaces.

The White House says it will save money by avoiding maintenance on the building and by selling it.
The building is heavily patrolled, but it appears few people are actually working in it.

The Pelosi Federal Building, located in a crime-ridden part of San Francisco, has long been a problem for employees and the community. Open-air drug markets, theft and violent crime in the surrounding area have made it unsafe. In 2023, federal employees stationed there were told to work from home for their safety. Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA) called for shutting the building down entirely due to ongoing drug activity nearby.
Hearing about Trump’s decision to sell the Pelosi Federal Building in SF reminds me of when he cancelled Nancy and Schiff’s overseas trip during the government shutdown back in 2019.

Despite these issues, California Democrats are complaining about the sale. Former Rep. Jackie Speier (D-CA) claimed it was politically motivated and warned that leasing new office space could cost more. However, with so many federal employees already working remotely, taxpayers have been forced to fund expensive, nearly empty buildings for years.

Developer Andy Ball, who worked on the building’s construction, said it was a waste of taxpayer money from the start. He estimated that it cost “50% more” than it would have in the private sector. Rather than keeping these failed projects on government payroll, the Trump administration is working to offload them.
The effort to reduce waste extends beyond real estate. Trump’s latest executive order aims to downsize unnecessary federal agencies, including the Presidio Trust, which manages San Francisco’s Presidio Park. Pelosi, who secured $200 million in federal funding for the park in 2023, is fighting against the cuts. Meanwhile, San Francisco’s commercial vacancy rate continues to rise, with the Mid-Market district — where the Pelosi building sits — reporting a 55% vacancy rate.
