Chicago’s Jewish community is grappling with shock and frustration after a Jewish man was shot while walking to his synagogue, allegedly by an illegal immigrant. The suspect, 22-year-old Sidi Mohamed Abdallahi, had been apprehended by Border Patrol in San Diego last year but was released, according to recent reports.
The shooting took place in the West Rogers Park neighborhood on Saturday morning, and Abdallahi reportedly shouted “Allahu Akbar” during a subsequent encounter with police and paramedics. The Jewish United Fund and local leaders suspect an antisemitic motive, though hate crime charges were not filed. Alderman Debra Silverstein has called for a full review of the case, urging Cook County prosecutors to seek the maximum penalty.

Video footage from the scene shows police engaging with Abdallahi, who was injured and later taken into custody. He now faces 14 charges, including attempted murder, but concerns over hate crime charges remain.
The case has brought to light concerns about illegal immigration and security at the southern border. A recent congressional report revealed that 99 individuals on the terror watch list were released into the U.S. under current border policies.
Residents and community leaders are calling for better vetting procedures to prevent similar incidents, noting that this tragic attack may have been preventable with stricter immigration controls.
