Trump Declares US Must Control Greenland For National Security

President-elect Donald Trump has reignited discussions about U.S. control over Greenland, declaring its ownership and control a critical necessity for national security. Trump’s comments came as he announced his nomination of Ken Howery as U.S. Ambassador to Denmark, the country that governs Greenland.

“For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity,” Trump stated in a social media post on Sunday.

Trump emphasized that controlling Greenland would strengthen U.S. efforts to counter Russia and China’s growing presence in the Arctic. Both nations have heavily invested in military and scientific projects in the region, making the Arctic a significant focus of global competition.

Trump’s remarks highlighted Greenland’s strategic importance in securing an advantage in the Arctic, where resource development and military positioning are increasingly contested. “Winning the race for the Arctic” would be a major benefit of acquiring Greenland, Trump suggested.

Ken Howery, Trump’s nominee for ambassador to Denmark, is a co-founder of PayPal and Founders Fund. Trump praised Howery’s previous service as ambassador to Sweden, where he led efforts to bolster defense and economic cooperation. “Ken turned American Innovation and Tech leadership into Global success stories,” Trump said, expressing confidence in Howery’s ability to represent U.S. interests abroad.

Trump closed his announcement by stating that Howery would “do a wonderful job in representing the interests of the United States,” underscoring the administration’s focus on strengthening U.S. influence in the Arctic through diplomatic and strategic efforts.
