Donald Trump has humorously referred to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as the “Governor” of the “Great State of Canada” in a Truth Social post following their recent meeting at Mar-a-Lago. The post comes as Trump reaffirms his commitment to imposing tariffs unless Canada addresses U.S. concerns over trade and illicit drug flows.
“It was a pleasure to have dinner with Governor Justin Trudeau of the Great State of Canada,” Trump joked. “I look forward to continuing our discussions on tariffs and trade to deliver spectacular results for all!”
The meeting highlighted Trump’s demand for action against illegal drugs entering the U.S., including fentanyl, which has become a national crisis. While 43 pounds of the drug were seized at the Canadian border last year, significantly more was intercepted at the Mexican border.
Trudeau pushed back, warning that tariffs on Canadian imports could lead to higher prices for U.S. consumers. “Americans are starting to see that tariffs on goods from Canada could make life more expensive,” Trudeau said, defending Canada’s economic contributions to the U.S.
Kristen Hillman, Canada’s U.S. ambassador, also commented, pointing out that 77% of Canadian exports go to the U.S. and highlighting Canada’s role in energy trade, with $170 billion sold to the U.S. last year. She noted that trade deficits must be viewed in context given Canada’s smaller population and economy.
Trump’s playful tone continued with an A.I. image of himself holding a Canadian flag, captioned “Oh, Canada!” Canadian Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc called the remarks lighthearted, underscoring strong relations between the two nations as Trump prepares for his second administration.
With humor and hardline policies intertwined, Trump’s approach signals his determination to secure trade deals that benefit American workers while keeping a sharp focus on border security and economic fairness.
