What Did They Do, Capitan?

More than one source in the press has asserted that Donald Trump ran from six more minutes with NPR’s Steve Inskeep in a recent interview. When Trump’s done talking, he’s done talking. He doesn’t have to go on filling in airtime with noise. And he doesn’t run from questions. That would be Biden.

WKRC Local 12 reported, “Before abruptly ending the interview, Trump said the only way to hold fair elections now would be to ‘solve the problem of the rigged presidential election of 2020.’”

On ABC’s This Week Sunday, Sen. Mike Rounds (R-SD) said:

“As Republicans, we did not win the presidential election. And if we go back and say, ‘Don’t vote because there’s cheating,’ we’ll be putting ourselves at a great disadvantage.”

In the NPR interview, Trump said, “No, I think it’s an advantage, because otherwise they’ll do it again in ’22 and ’24, and Rounds is wrong on that. Wrong.”

What did they do, Trumpy bear?

Cheating? They cheated! They moved the goalposts mid-game.

They let people mail-in ballots by the millions. It has never before been permitted on such a scale in US elections. The result was historically weirdly high voter turnout, except that it did not turn out at all that put so many 2020 election ballots in county precincts’ hands to count. It was vote-by-mail balloting by millions of people who weren’t serving in the blasted military.

I’m not worried about the ballot count being off by far enough to make a difference anywhere. Still, I’d trust it more if elections were facilitated by some open-source, publicly verifiable by any anonymous third party, cryptographically secured, and validated voting machine.

Of course, it’s unlikely a solution like that could be rolled out for the 2024 elections, and possibly even more unlikely that you would like it to be that easy.

So Republicans will have to go into the rest of the ‘20s with a mission to make their party’s platform valuable to more people in the implementation, and more broadly appealing in the salesmanship, or learn why I’m right from the election results.

More people than ever are going to keep voting. It is not transitory like the 14-days to flatten your balls or Biden-era price inflation. It’s a forever change. You can’t keep these people from watching the show, commenting, and voting. It’s a flood coming deep and wide. Orange man’s just going to have to make more of these homies laugh if he wants to win.
