Dodge County Sheriff Dale Schmidt has issued a stark warning, saying Wisconsin will face severe challenges if Vice President Kamala Harris wins the election against President Donald Trump. Schmidt delivered this message while testifying during a House Judiciary Committee hearing in Milwaukee, where he outlined the growing impact of the border crisis on Wisconsin communities.
As president of the Badger State Sheriffs Association, Schmidt highlighted the rise in crime and the pressure on local law enforcement resources due to drug trafficking. “If Trump doesn’t win this election, we are screwed,” he recalled one of his colleagues telling him, adding that another sheriff emphasized that many do not fully understand the severity of the crisis.

Schmidt described the drug trafficking issues in Dodge County, pointing out that Mexican cartels are now a significant threat. He expressed concern for the safety of his family and colleagues, saying, “I’m fearful for my family and those that serve with me.” He explained that the cartels’ presence is leading to increased violence and drug-related crime.
Schmidt also noted that officers often encounter individuals without valid licenses or identification, making law enforcement efforts more challenging. He stressed that federal action is needed at the southern border, remarking, “I would love to put up a border around Dodge County or Wisconsin, but that’s the federal government’s responsibility.”
“We will have more cartel members coming into the state of Wisconsin.”

Schmidt thanked Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) for attending the hearing but expressed disappointment that Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) did not participate, questioning her commitment to addressing these pressing issues.
Eric Toney, the district attorney from Fond du Lac County, also spoke at the hearing, detailing the surge in drug trafficking in his area. “We’re seeing quantities of drugs like never before,” Toney said, adding that the arrest of illegal immigrants is contributing to overcrowded jails, putting pressure on county resources.
With the border crisis as a central theme in Republican campaigns, figures like President Trump and Senate candidate Eric Hovde are calling for decisive action to protect states like Wisconsin.
