Biden Almost Stepped Down As VP Over Afghanistan

The Special Counsel report released Thursday on President Joe Biden putting classified national security papers at risk revealed that as vice president, Biden nearly stepped down from the White House in protest of then-President Barack Obama’s troop surge to Afghanistan.

President Biden considered stepping down from the White House in 2009 after Obama signed off on sending more U.S. troops to Afghanistan over his first year in office. Biden wrote a note to himself in November 2009 that he may consider resigning. He openly warned the president that sending more troops would be a “strategic blunder.”

“Tomorrow the President is going to make a fateful decision regarding Afghanistan — as I sat looking out the window at the sea — thinking I should resign in protest over what will bring his administration down,” Biden wrote in his notebook.

“Although I obviously wasn’t there I feel like this is what it must have felt like for Kennedy then Johnson in the early days of VTN [Vietnam]. I feel guilty and boxed in myself. Guilty for not having been more successful w/ the President — and staying. Boxed in by knowing or at least feeling that my resignation would only harden his position and leave him with one less voice,” Biden added.

“He wanted the record to show that he was right about Afghanistan; that his critics were wrong; and that he had opposed President Obama’s mistaken decision forcefully when it was made — that his judgment was sound when it mattered most,” the special counsel’s report stated.

“This evidence provides grounds to believe that Mr. Biden willfully retained the marked classified documents about Afghanistan,” the report says, which could be a cause for indictment.

Special Counsel Robert Hur explained why he would not pursue charges against the president. His report said if he were to bring Biden before a jury, the president would most likely “present himself to a jury, as he did during our interview with him, as a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.”

“It’s a nightmare,” a Democrat House member told NBC News on condition of anonymity so they could be candid. They added, “It weakens President Biden electorally, and Donald Trump would be a disaster and an authoritarian.” The delegate to Congress said, “For Democrats, we’re in a grim situation.”
