Drugs Discovered in Shared Living Areas
Authorities in Campbell County executed a search warrant on August 2, 2025, at the home of Desirae Harlan in Gillette, Wyoming, following a narcotics investigation. Deputies discovered illegal substances and paraphernalia in areas frequented by Harlan’s three sons, ages 11, 7, and 4.
Among the seized items were crystal methamphetamine, suspected fentanyl, and a bong believed to be used for smoking fentanyl. At least one of the rooms where drugs were stored contained clothing belonging to one of the children. Investigators noted that these rooms were not locked, and the children had unfettered access.

During interviews, the children told law enforcement that they entered the affected rooms regularly, and officers confirmed the lack of any locking mechanisms. This led prosecutors to file three separate felony child endangerment charges, one for each minor in the household. Each charge carries a maximum penalty of five years’ imprisonment and a $5,000 fine.
Custody Revoked as Legal Case Advances
Harlan, in addition to the child endangerment charges, faces two felony counts of drug possession related to the methamphetamine and fentanyl found at the residence. The Department of Family Services intervened immediately to remove the children from the home and place them in a safe environment.
The case docket reveals that bond was set at $7,500, cash or surety, which Harlan has been permitted to post. However, as a condition of her release, she currently does not retain custody of her children. Her preliminary court hearing is scheduled for August 11, 2025, at the Campbell County Courthouse.
Prosecutors are expected to present evidence from the search, including physical exhibits and testimony from the deputies involved. No plea has been entered at this time. Harlan has not made any public statements regarding the allegations.
Legal Ramifications and Community Reaction
Legal analysts note that Wyoming law treats child endangerment involving controlled substances as a serious felony, particularly when children are exposed to environments where drug use or storage occurs. The presence of fentanyl, a substance with high overdose potential even in trace amounts, is likely to weigh heavily in judicial proceedings.
Community members have expressed concern about the apparent lack of safeguards in the household and the potential for lasting psychological effects on the children. Local child welfare agencies are reportedly conducting an independent assessment to determine long-term care arrangements.
As the case proceeds, further legal actions—including possible plea negotiations or additional charges—remain possible depending on the outcome of the preliminary hearing. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not ruled out further developments.
