Hush Money Allegation Targets GOP Rebel

A former congressional staffer says Rep. Thomas Massie offered her $5,000 to stay quiet — and the allegations landed just one week before a high-stakes Republican primary where Massie faced a Trump-backed challenger.

Story Snapshot

  • Cynthia West, Massie’s ex-girlfriend and a former congressional aide, says he offered her $5,000 to drop a wrongful termination complaint against Rep. Victoria Spartz.
  • Massie flatly denied the claims, calling them “false and unsubstantiated” and saying no ethics complaints have ever been filed against him in 14 years in office.
  • Spartz also denied knowing about any payment offer and said West’s job ended after 90 days due to “concerning conduct.”
  • The allegations surfaced one week before Massie’s May 19, 2026 Republican primary against a Trump-backed opponent, raising questions about timing and motive.

What West Claims Happened

Cynthia West went public in an online interview. She says she briefly worked for Rep. Victoria Spartz (R-Indiana) before being let go. West then planned to file a wrongful termination complaint. According to West, Massie — her boyfriend at the time — offered her $5,000 to “just walk away” and drop the complaint. She also says she sought a $60,000 settlement for what she called retaliatory discharge. West has not publicly released documents or recordings to back up the offer.

West also alleged that Massie bragged to her about a sexual encounter with Rep. Lauren Boebert. West says she went public partly because she felt Massie was being hypocritical. She noted that he publicly pushed for transparency on the Jeffrey Epstein files while privately trying to silence her. West says the relationship started after Massie reached out to her on social media following the death of his wife in 2024.

Massie and Spartz Push Back Hard

Massie responded quickly on social media, calling every claim false. “All of the claims of inappropriate conduct are false. I’ve never offered anyone money in exchange for their silence,” he said. He also pointed out that no ethics complaints have ever been filed against him in 14 years in Congress. Massie suggested that if any money changed hands, it was meant to help West with legal costs — not to buy her silence. He did not release financial records to support that explanation.

Spartz backed Massie and disputed West’s account. Her office said Spartz “has never heard of an alleged $5,000 settlement proposal — or any other settlement proposal.” Spartz also pushed back on the firing claim, saying West’s 90-day temporary job simply was not extended because of “concerning conduct.” Spartz said she refused to settle West’s complaint during the pre-filing period and denied all wrongdoing. Both Massie and Spartz called the timing suspicious, noting the story broke just days before the primary.

Why the Timing Raises Eyebrows

Massie has been one of the few Republicans willing to openly defy President Trump. He has broken with his party on foreign aid, the Epstein files, and other issues. In the May 19 primary, he faced a GOP challenger with Trump’s direct backing. Massie said the allegations were “an obvious attempt to influence the outcome of this election.” Whether that is true or not, the timing does invite scrutiny from anyone who believes political attacks are timed for maximum damage.

This story also fits a much larger and troubling pattern on Capitol Hill. Since 1997, Congress has paid more than $17 million in public money to settle workplace disputes, according to Politico. More recently, documents obtained by Rep. Nancy Mace revealed that taxpayers paid over $300,000 to settle sexual harassment claims against six former House members or their offices since 2003. These settlements often come with non-disclosure agreements, keeping the public in the dark. That history makes it harder for Americans — on both the left and the right — to simply take a lawmaker’s denial at face value, regardless of party.
