Danish officials stated that Russian naval vessels also engaged in maneuvers that placed them on collision courses with Danish ships, and a Russian warship reportedly anchored in Danish waters for over a week. These actions are described as part of a broader pattern of hybrid warfare, which has also involved tracking with targeting radars, drone incursions, and suspected sabotage of undersea infrastructure.
Thomas Ahrenkiel, Director of the Danish Defense Intelligence Service, characterized the provocations as an attempt to test NATO’s cohesion and its willingness to defend member states. Hybrid warfare tactics, which blend military and non-military strategies, are designed to achieve objectives without triggering a full military response.
The Danish straits hold strategic importance for military logistics, global commerce, and energy flows. The proximity of NATO allies and Russian territory in the region increases the potential for miscalculation.
In response to the reported Russian actions, NATO allies, including the United States, have increased their military presence in the Baltic Sea.
